Board Certification by the American Board of General Dentistry signifies the pinnacle of achievement in general dentistry. In attaining board certification, your dentist demonstrates a commitment to providing the best possible patient care through a dedication to his or her continuing education.

Board Certified general dentists set the standard for excellence through their extensive training in all aspects of dentistry. This training expands beyond dental school, in residencies and other post-doctoral dental graduate programs. Board Certification is awarded only after completion of a series of written, clinical, and oral examinations.
What are the requirements for board certification by the American Board of General Dentistry?

In pursuing board certification, your dentist must first meet the educational requirements of the American Board of General Dentistry.

  • Educational requirements include successful completion of a post-doctoral residency in general dentistry, or successful completion of the requirements for the Master Certificate from the Academy of General Dentistry.
  • Upon completion of the educational requirements, your dentist must then successfully pass a comprehensive written examination.
  • Finally, your dentist must demonstarate their understanding and knowledge of all phases of dentistry by undertaking a demanding Oral examination. This final Oral exam is presented to and reviewed by Board Members of the American Board of General Dentistry.
  • Upon passing this extensive examination process your dentist is awarded Board Certification.

How many dentists have received board certification by the American Board of General Dentistry?

Currently only 1 percent of general dentists have achieved this prestigious Board Certification status. The American Board of General Dentistry is proud of all its members who, in addition to meeting rigorous requirements for the board verification, must complete at least 125 hours of continuing education credit every five years.
