Importance of good Oral Health
With all the excitement of a pregnancy, dental health is often overlooked. However, neglecting treatment for dental issues could have detrimental results for you and your baby. There are several simple steps you can take to ensure you maintain optimal dental health during this important and life changing time.
A common dental problem that arises during pregnancy is gingivitis. This is the inflammation of the gums. You may notice that your gums are sore and that they bleed. This is merely the result of the changes that your body is undergoing. It is imperative that this condition is treated as if it worsens it could lead to more serious gum disease and even tooth loss.
It is important to visit the dentist at least once during your pregnancy. Inform the office when making the appointment that you are expecting. Share any concerns you may have with your dentist. A common misconception is that pain medication, local anesthetic, and x-rays are not safe during this time; however, this is not true.
Your everyday dental routine should be maintained. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily will maintain your oral health. Unfortunately pregnancy may be accompanied by “morning sickness” which we know does not lend itself only to the morning. If you do vomit it is important to prevent acid from eroding the enamel of your teeth by rinsing your mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with a cup of water.
Maintaining an active lifestyle by exercising and making wise life choices not only contributes to your having a healthy pregnancy but also enhances your oral health. Smoking and consuming alcohol have deleterious effects and so should be avoided.
After the birth of your baby your life will change significantly. It is important that you do not neglect your own dental health at this time. Ensure that you maintain your dental regimen (no matter how tired you may be).
